A lot of modern CD’s use electronic drums underneath layers of acoustic and live music. Cale Pellick’s debut solo CD, “In The Loop,” does just the opposite. Pellick, a drummer and saxophonist by trade, lays down the acoustic drums and adds layers of virtual instruments on top. In fact, other than the vocals, every instrument on the CD is by his own hands.
There are a wide variety of tunes on “In The Loop.” Some are instrumental loops with funky and jazzy rhythms while others are songs. The most entertaining song on the disk is a rap about the City of New Orleans called “Love It or Leave It” written by Cale Pellick and sung by Derrick “Mr. Smoker” Freeman. “Makin’ Noise” is another standout, with lyrics written by Burke Ingraffia.
The tunes should more appropriately be called “compositions.” There are a lot of intricate details in the very fine production and well-thought-out movements to each of the pieces. Cale Pellick has both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music from the University of New Orleans, and these tracks are an enjoyable listen for both the serious musician and the casual listener.
The production on this CD is brilliant. Mixed by Grammy award winner Steve Reynolds, every instrument has its own clear place in the stereoscopic spectrum. Audiophiles who appreciate good production will appreciate Reynolds and Pellick’s attention to detail.
The vocalists on this CD include Derrick Freeman, YaDonna West, Erica Falls, Kesha McKey, Ronnie Vice, Jamey Kelly, Ruby Rendrag, and John Gros.
